Sports Medicine
Southern Vermont Athletics provides a variety of sports medicine services available to all student-athletes. On campus services include Athletic Training, Strength and Conditioning, and Sports Nutrition. All available services are free to student-athletes and included during their respective sport seasons. Off season services are also available by request of the student-athlete. Additional Physical Therapy and Orthopedic services are also available throughout Bennington for Southern Vermont College student-athletes.
Athletic Training
The Southern Vermont College Athletic Training Department works with the coaching staff to ensure the safety of the student-athletes during athletic participation. The Athletic Training program works to prevent, assess, and rehabilitate athletic injuries, as well as provide acute health care and follow up care to injured athletes. In addition to the support of athletic injuries, the Athletic Training Department is available for any health related concerns by the student-athletes
The Athletic Training Room is located within the Field House and is accessible to student-athletes throughout the day. The Athletic Training Room includes an evaluation table, taping table, and two treatment tables with the following modalities available; hydrocollator, ice, whirlpool, electrical stimulation, and ultrasound. Satellite Athletic Training stations are available at all campus home athletic events throughout the athletic seasons.
The Athletic Training Department works closely with additional medical care providers in Bennington including physical therapy and orthopedic professionals for any existing or acute injury needs.
Strength and Conditioning
Southern Vermont College provides a full time Strength and Conditioning Coach available to all student-athletes. The Southern Vermont College Strength and Conditioning Program focuses on the individual athlete's current training level, the sport, and the position of each student-athlete.
The Strength and Conditioning Program has two main focuses. The use of prehabilitaiton is incorporated in all student-athlete workouts. Prehabilitation is the use of preseason screens, corrective exercises and dynamic flexibility to address key injury concerns found within each individual sport. Prehabilitation reduces the risk for injuries and is administered throughout the year. The second focus of the SVC Strength and Conditioning Program is functional training. While traditional training is incorporated within the Southern Vermont College Strength and Conditioning Program, functional training is used to incorporated movements and patterns that are sport specific to the student-athlete's individual sport via a multiplaner approach.
The Southern Vermont College Strength and Conditioning program incorporates speed and agility training as well as energy system conditioning for each sport. Speed training programs focus on overall running mechanics, acceleration, deceleration, and top speed separately as well as collectively. Agility training programs focus on foot speed, change of direction, and movement transitions throughout the frontal, sagital, and transverse planes.
Nutrition
Sports Nutrition evaluations are also available to student-athletes by request. Athletes can inquire about a personalized nutritional guideline, which will break down daily caloric needs of the student-athlete including a breakdown on percentage of protein, carbohydrates, and fats for daily consumption. Generalized guidelines for eating habits are also included to allow student-athletes to find healthier alternatives for their nutritional needs, without giving up their favorite foods. Post-workout nutritional plans are also available for student-athletes.
Southern Vermont College does not promote the use of any supplements for athletic performance. Southern Vermont College adheres to any and all NCAA regulations for drugs and sports supplements. Supplements are not encouraged to take the place of proper nutritional and daily meals. The Sports Medicine and coaching staff of Southern Vermont College believe that hard work, dedication, and proper nutrition will provide the student-athlete will the proper foundation to achieve maximal sports performance results.
