BENNINGTON, Vt. – Each of the past five years, it has been accustomed for the Southern Vermont baseball team to hold its annual alumni game. During the college's homecoming weekend, on September 22nd, all former Mountaineer baseball players are invited to come back to campus for the game which will start at 10 a.m. following the team's scheduled fall practice.
"The alumni game is an important aspect to our program," stated first-year head coach Dave Gage. "It is a chance for us to recognize all of the players who have helped build the program to where it is today. If it wasn't for each and every person who put on an SVC baseball uniform, we wouldn't have the chance to be where we are today. So this is a great opportunity to show our gratitude to all of them."
This September, Gage will bring a little something different to the game. Previously, the current SVC team has played against the alumni; this fall, Gage (SVC '10) will have the alumni face each other.
The two sides will be coached by current players with each team having a head coach, assistant coach, pitching coach, hitting coach, bench coach and bullpen coach. The rest of the current SVC players will serve as umpires, with the World Series-style six umpires.
"The biggest thing I want to come out of the game is for everyone to have fun," said Gage. "The new style will allow our players to share experiences with former players and allow our players to be umpires and coaches for a day. Hopefully they can realize how much fun coaching is and how hard umpiring is," the first year skipper joked.
After the game, there will also be a post game get together for all alumni. For more information regarding the event, please contact Coach Gage at 802-447-4662 or SVC Development Specialist Sam Damon at 802-447-6357.
