BENNINGTON, Vt. – After a slew of postponements, the Southern Vermont College baseball team finally played its 2017 Opening Day on Thursday but fell 15-1 to Dean College in non-conference action at Bill Epstein Field.

The Bulldogs gained a slim 1-0 edge in the top of the second before adding three runs in the third. SVC got one back in the home half—only to see the visitors notch five in the fourth and another three in both the fifth and sixth frames. The Mountaineers were held scoreless in their final six trips to the plate as Dean spoiled their home opener.

Southern Vermont (4-14) continues the New England Collegiate Conference schedule on Friday with a 7 p.m. first pitch against Lesley University at Trinity Stadium.

SVC freshman right fielder Anthony LaBella (Exeter, N.H.) was 1-4 with a run scored while junior shortstop John Arancio (Oradell, N.J.) and sophomore first baseman Cody Sullivan (Schuylerville, N.Y.) were both 1-2 on the afternoon.

Southern Vermont sophomore center fielder Zack Stacey (Saratoga, N.Y.) also tallied a single—extending his hitting streak to 14 games.

Mountaineer sophomore righty Nick Hartman (East Hartland, Conn.) took the loss (0-2) from the bump while striking out four in 3.1 innings with the start.

Both teams left two runner on base in the first before Dean was able to push across a run in the second. SVC couldn't take advantage of a first-and-third situation in the home half of the inning, and the Bulldogs then went up 4-0 with a homer and a run-scoring double.

Southern Vermont trimmed its deficit with a lone run in the third after LaBella tagged a one-out single down the line in right. He moved around the diamond with three wild pitches to score and make it a 4-1 ballgame.

Dean seized control in a big way at that point—putting up six runs on five hits before retiring the SVC side in order. The Bulldogs added three more in the fifth and another three in the sixth while keeping Southern Vermont off the base paths en route to the win.
