HAVERHILL, Mass. – Southern Vermont College got back to its New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) baseball schedule Friday night—falling 8-2 to Lesley University at Trinity Stadium in the series opener.
LU took a 3-0 lead after the third before adding another two in the fourth. The Lynx then put up three runs in the bottom of the seventh to go up 8-0. Southern Vermont came back with two in the eighth, but that would be it for the visitors as Lesley grabbed the first of the three-game set with the Mountaineers.
SVC (4-15, 2-2 NECC) is back at Trinity Saturday afternoon for the last two of the league series with Lesley—first pitch slated for 2:30 p.m.
Southern Vermont designated hitter Cody Sullivan (Schuylerville, N.Y.) went 1-3 with an RBI while junior right fielder Niko D'Agnese (Mahopac, N.Y.) was 1-3 with a walk and a run scored. Sophomore center fielder Zack Stacey (Saratoga, N.Y.) extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a 1-4 showing at the dish.
Mountaineer senior righty Joshua Hay (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) went six innings with the start—allowing two earned runs while striking out five Lynx batters in the loss (2-4).
LU put up two runs in the bottom of the second with a pair of hits, and the Lynx added one run with the help of a triple in the third. Lesley added two more in the fourth off a pair of singles before notching three runs in the seventh to make it 8-0.
Southern Vermont got on the board in the eighth with two runs on three hits. Junior left fielder Luigi Magliocca (Broadalbin, N.Y.) started the inning with a one-out single, and D'Agnese followed with a two-out double. Sullivan then tagged a run-scoring base hit, and a Lesley error allowed D'Agnese to score to cut the deficit to six.
The Mountaineers couldn't manufacture any more offense in the eighth or the ninth, however, as the Lynx took the series opener.
