Nighthawks Edge Out Mountaineers

BROOKLINE, Mass. - The SVC men's basketball team lost to host Newbury on Thursday by the final score of 70-60. The Mountaineers received yet another strong outing from junior captain Joe Karnik (20 points, 10 rebounds) and a solid performance from Brendan Kordana who chipped in 16 points of his own in addition to four assists.
Ultimately the Mountaineers were plagued by late foul trouble after carrying a 32-31 lead into halftime.
The Mountaineers opened up with a quick three-pointer off the tip and quickly gained momentum going on a 10-0 run. The Nighthawks would not be silenced, however, as they received two clutch three-pointers from Robert Foley keeping his team within striking distance, down by one at the half.
The second half brought a powerful Nighthawk rally as they turned up their intensity on defense. Kevin Cleveland and John Rowley led all scorers after the break with ten and nine points a piece - which included a combined 7-8 connection from the free throw line. Back-to-back steals at the nine minute mark - produced two quick baskets for Newbury and putting the game just out of reach for Southern Vermont.
The Nighthawks' improved to overall record to 5-7 (2-1 NECC) while the Mountaineers fell to 4-9 (1-3 NECC).
The SVC men will try to turn things around on Saturday, at home against Daniel Webster at 3:00 p.m.
