Mountaineers Drop OT Contest with in-state rival, 1-0

BENNINGTON, Vt. - The Southern Vermont College men's soccer team took its second straight opponent into overtime before losing 1-0 to Castleton State College in the 99th minute in front of over 75 fans at Everett Field.

It was another great defensive showing for the Mountaineers, who fell to 0-3 on the season despite having only given up four goals, only two of which have occurred in regulation, to date.

"We played a very good opponent today in Castleton. Defensively we were very sound and we created some opportunities on the counter-attack. Unfortunately we weren't able to convert which is a strong testament to Castleton's defense" said Mountaineer head coach Tim Penrod.

Castleton outshot the Mountaineers, 36-2, but the Mountaineers came up big on defense the entire game.

Sophomore goal keeper Aaron Eschler (Gloversville, NY/ Broadalbin-Perth) continued his strong play on the season, holding Castleton scoreless throughout regulation on his way to 14 saves.

The Mountaineer men will return to action Saturday September 6th when they will travel to Westfield State College for a 1:00 PM match.
