Mountaineers Can't Take Down Colonels

BENNINGTON, Vt. - The Mountaineers men's soccer team allowed seven goals to pass through the frame against Curry College, Monday, in the eventual 7-1 loss. Prior to this game Southern Vermont's opponents were averaging 1.53 goals per game a huge improvement from last years 8.07 opponent average.
The Colonels (6-2-2) got off to a quick start with two goals by
Johnjoe Hallissey in the 3rd minute of the game from
successful corner kicks. The Mountaineers (2-7-1), a bit shaken by
the early goals, seemed to recover when Benjamin Radzicki scored an
unassisted goal in the 13th minute of play to make it
3-0 in Curry's favor. One more Colonel goal in the
37th minute gave them a 4-0 half-time lead.
In the 50th minute of play SVC sophomore Tony
Martinez (Hoosick Falls, N.Y./Hoosick Falls HS) got fouled
in the Curry 18 giving the Mountaineers a chance to put themselves
on the board. Martinez capitalized on the penalty kick opportunity
with a strike past a diving, Colonel goalkeeper, Mathew
Smith-Burlage to make it 4-1. But with three more Curry goals
following the SVC score they could not regain control of the
game.
Southern Vermont sophomore goalkeeper Aaron Eschler
(Gloversville, NY/Broadalbin-Perth HS) allowed four goals
in the first period and had four saves on the day. Captain
sophomore Elias Skiff (Durham, NY/Cairo-Durham HS)
started the second period and allowed three goals. Skiff
had six saves for the Mountaineers.
Southern Vermont hits the road Wednesday to play Skidmore College.
Kickoff is 7:00p.m. under the lights.
