Mountaineers Garner Two NECC Awards

BENNINGTON Vt. - It is only two weeks into the Southern Vermont College Men's Soccer season however members of the team are already gaining recognition from the conference (New England Collegiate Conference) in its inaugural season.
Freshman forward Nick Haggerty (Wynantskill, NY/Averill Park HS) won the NECC Player of the Week Award while sophomore mid-fielder Tony Martinez (Hoosick Falls, Hoosick Falls HS) took home the NECC Rookie of the Week.
Haggerty put up solid numbers, racking up four goals (two in each game), two assists, and seven shots (six of those being shot on goal) landing him the top spot in the conference for the week.
Martinez also had an exceptional week scoring three goals, one assist, and six shots (five of those being shot on goal) setting the bar for the fellow rookies of the NECC.
The Mountaineers took on Green Mountain College on Thursday, September 11, and won 3-2 to gain its first win of the season. Haggerty scored two of his four goals of the week in this game; his first was with an assist from Martinez. Not giving the Eagles a chance to catch their breath Martinez hit it in the frame to make it 2-0 SVC. Haggerty's second strike was a sideline chip from 40 yards out to seal the victory.
"These are phenomenal achievements by these two young men," said Coach Penrod. "There statistics are a testament to the hard work that they put in since before the start of pre-season."
On the road SVC beat Word of Life Bible Institute 5-1 in the Saturday afternoon showdown. Haggerty and Martinez once again turned it up a notch and blew past the Huskies defense to score two goals each in the victory. SVC tallied up 21 shots on the day to wear down the home team and come out on top.
