Quinn Takes Over SVC Women's Basketball

BENNINGTON, Vt. - Southern Vermont College Women's Basketball Coach Ben Kozik, who was a force in recruiting and managing a strong team this season, has left the Mountaineers program to pursue other coaching opportunities. Assistant Coach Mike Quinn will take over as Women's Basketball Coach for the 2009-'10 season.

"As sorry as we are to see Ben move on, we are thrilled that Mike Quinn will be there giving us the continuity and momentum of success for the SVC women's basketball program," said Interim Athletic Director Don Schaffer. "Mike is a great coach with a wealth of knowledge about basketball. He's also a coach with a lot of integrity and is a great teacher of the game."

Mike Quinn has over 22 years of coaching experience and management experience for baseball, softball, and basketball. Quinn co-founded a girls' recreational league and served as the president for over three years. Several of his teams in baseball and softball went all the way to state and national tournaments. Quinn comes from a professional background in Social Services with over 30 years of experience in the Child Abuse and Maltreatment Register for the State of New York. He is a graduate of the College of Saint Rose with a degree in Sociology and Social Work.

2009 was a promising year for the women's team, which finished 6-19 overall, the most wins since 2001-'02. Kozik is credited with recruiting point guard Joa Claircius who led the nation in scoring as a freshman in Division III basketball (ranked 35th overall) this season. "I am excited to take over the SVC women's basketball program," said Head Coach Mike Quinn. "We've built a solid foundation and a solid core of good young players." Coach Quinn plans to continue to build the program through player development and recruitment.

Kozik said his decision to move on was "bittersweet." "Coaching this team was one of the most rewarding jobs of my career," said Kozik. "It's like leaving members of your family.  However, this program is in great hands with Mike Quinn."
