SVC Can't Fend Off Hawks

LEICESTER, Mass. - Freshman forward Christie Henry led the Mountaineers with a solid 12 points and seven rebounds but a strong performance by senior guard Courtney Fiske (23 points, six rebounds) led the Becker College Lady Hawks to victory over the Southern Vermont Mountaineers 64-37 in New England Collegiate Conference women's basketball action Saturday. The Hawks pick up their first win of the year to improve to 1-9 (1-0 NECC) the Mountaineers drop to 1-8 (0-2 NECC).

Southern Vermont opened up with three quick baskets led by Henry and Corey Higgins to hold a slim 6-4 lead. Becker's Fiske hit a 3 pointer off a Katelyn Cavanaugh missed a free throw to give the Lady Hawks a 7-6 lead in which they would not relinquish. Fiske finished the first half with 17 points and four rebounds. Mountaineer Alyssa Davis had 8 points in the half as Becker took a 28-21 lead into the locker room.

The Hawks quickly built their second half lead to 39-27 when Fiske and guard Kristina Desnoyers hit back-to-back-to-back three pointers.  Becker gained and 19 point advantage when they hit eight consecutive free throws. The Mountaineers were out-rebounded 53-47 and the Hawks had 15 steals in the game. Southern Vermont's Tiarra Hall had 10 points and nine rebounds and Higgins had 10 rebounds.

SVC returns to action when they host Daniel Webster College on January 12th for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off.
