SVC Womens Soccer Shut Out
BENNINGTON, Vt. - The Southern Vermont women's soccer team battled hard on Saturday only to succumb to an improved Pine Manor club, 6-0, in a non-conference matchup at Everett Soccer Field on the SVC Campus.
With the loss, the Mountaineers fall to 0-4 on the season. The Gators of Pine Manor improve to 2-0 with the victory, doubling the amount of wins they had last year when they went 1-17.
The Gators outshot the Mountaineers 51 to 4, putting 28 of those strikes on net. SVC Goaltender Jillian Neudecker (Johnsonville, NY/Tamarac HS), who leads the New England Collegiate Conference in saves per game, denied 22 shots.
Pine Manor's Alicia Grenier opened the scoring 17 minutes into the first half when she took a pass from Beth Deegan and snuck it past Neudecker for an early 1-0. The goal was Grenier's first of two on the day.
Deegan, Kasey Jeronimo, Bathany Kapell, and Victoria Garcia all added goals for the Gators. Lindsey Segal-Bator assisted on two of the finishes.
The Mountaineers best chance to score came in the first half on a breakaway by senior forward Leslie Surdam (Hoosick, NY/Hoosick Falls HS). Surdam beat the Gator defense only to be stopped by Pine Manor goalie Kayla Nielsen, who had four stymies in the net.
Surdam also had the Mountaineers best shot to score in the second half when she attempted to chip a 30-footer over the head of Nielsen, who leaped and made a remarkable save on the play.
Southern Vermont looks to pick up its first win of the season again on Wednesday, September 17, when they play host to the Fighting Tigers of SUNY-Cobleskill. Kickoff is at 4:30 PM.
