Wildcats Pounce on Mountaineers in Season Opener
Bennington, Vt. - The Southern Vermont women's soccer team got off to a rough start on Saturday when they hosted the SUNY IT Wildcats in their season opener, in the inaugural game at Everett field. SUNY IT scored six times in each half to beat the Mountaineers 12-1.
The Wildcats had seven different ladies put the ball in the back of the net and were led by Jane Burroughs (Fonda, NY/Fonda-Fultonville) who scored four times and had one assist. Amy King (Brookfield, NY/Brookfield) and Amanda Myers also beat the keeper twice and Myers had three assists while King had two. As a team SUNY IT shot 62 times and put 34 of those on net.
The Mountaineers did show positives though as Daryl Aubin (Forestdale, RI/North Smithfield HS) scored the lone goal in the 88th minute when the Wildcats keeper came charging out for the ball and Aubin pushed the ball by her. Leslie Surdam (Hoosick, NY/ Hoosick Falls HS) was credited for the assist on the play. SVC also had eight shots and put seven of them on frame. Jillian Neudecker (Johnsonville, NY/Tamarac HS) who was showered with shots the entire game made 22 saves.
For the game both Wildcats goalies Laurel Hosmer(Winchester, MA/ Winchester HS) and Cynthia De Leon (Brooklyn, NY/James Madison) made three saves a piece and the Wildcats had seven corner kicks compared to the Mountaineers one. SVC falls to 0-1 and will travel to Green Mountain next Saturday September 6th. The Mountaineers return home on September 11th when they host Word of Life for a 4:30 PM start time. SUNY IT improves to 1-0 and will host Hamilton College on September 7th.
