CANTON, N.Y. – The Southern Vermont College women's volleyball team fell in a pair of season-opening matches Friday night in the first day of the SUNY Canton Invitational, first losing 3-0 to SUNY Polytechnic before being topped 3-0 by SUNY Potsdam in the nightcap at Roos House.
The Mountaineers (0-2) conclude their Invitational schedule Saturday morning, taking on the hosting Kangaroos at 10 a.m.
SUNY Polytechnic 3 – Southern Vermont 0
Poly took down the Mountaineers in straight sets during SVC's first contest of the year, sweeping the match with scores of 25-16, 25-13, and 25-11.
Southern Vermont senior captain Brin Goldman (St. Croix, Virgin Islands) led her team with seven kills, adding two aces and six digs to her line. Freshman Sarah Billow (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) followed with three kills and a pair of digs while sophomore setter Michelle Urkevich (Troy, N.Y.) had 10 assists and a kill to go along with nine digs which tied the team-high.
Freshman defensive specialist Gaby Oropeza (Riverside, Calif.) also had nine digs in the effort as sophomore Lizzy Bench (St. Petersburg, Fla.) notched five digs, a pair of kills, and three service aces.
SUNY Potsdam 3 – Southern Vermont 0
The Bears defeated Southern Vermont in consecutive frames, notching set wins of 25-12, 25-15, and 25-20 in SVC's second matchup of the evening.
Goldman once again paced the Mountaineers in the kills column with another seven against Potsdam while tacking up a team-best 15 digs and a service ace. Bench had three kills, five digs and a pair of aces while Billow tallied another three kills and nine digs.
Oropeza chipped in with nine digs of her own as Urkevich registered 13 assists and seven digs in the loss. Freshman Tay Phillips (Stephentown, N.Y.) notched a kill, a solo block and a block assist, and Goldman added two solo stuffs in the effort.
