Mountaineer Cross Country Women place 8th in season opener
Marcy, N.Y. - The Southern Vermont College women's cross country team began its season with an 8th place finish Saturday in the second annual Wildcat Invitational hosted by SUNY-IT. The Mountaineer woman may not have come out on top but demonstrated that they are ready to compete this year. The cross country program proves to be on track with the new addition of Coach Joe Catania.
Daemon College took first place in the meet, posting a score of 44 points. Utica College and SUNY Potsdam were the second and third place finishers with scores of 53 and 73 points respectively. The Mountaineers rounded out the field with a score of 218.
Leading the way for the Mountaineer's in the 5k run was senior Julie Patenaude whose time of 27:32.8 was good enough for 44th place. Freshman Blair Downing closely followed, checking in with a 46th place finish. Senior Rachel Volk was the third Mountaineer to finish, stopping the timer in 52nd place. Sophomore Tiarra Hall and freshman Lyncee Dadivas were 54th and 55th while junior Samantha Mayotte finished out the Southern Vermont attack in 57th place.
Senior Jessica Gorski of Daemon College was the first woman to cross the finish line, breaking the course record in a time of 21:28.1.
The Mountaineer women return to action Saturday, September 13, at the Smith College Invitational. The meet kicks off at 11:00 AM.
