MANCHESTER, Vt. – Late goals by the SUNY Canton men's soccer team allowed the visiting Kangaroos to walk out of Applejack Stadium Sunday night with a 4-1 win over Southern Vermont College.

The Roos led 2-0 at halftime before SVC cut it to a one-goal game in the 56th minute. Canton got some breathing room with two strikes in the final 16 minutes of play, however, to grab the non-conference victory.

The Mountaineers (1-7) look to regroup prior to a 4 p.m. game at SUNY Delhi on Wednesday.

The Kangaroos took a quick lead when they got one to go from the middle of the box just 2:15 into the match. A second tally then came off a Canton player's foot in the ninth minute for what proved to be the game winner. A quick Roo defense prevented Southern Vermont from getting on the end of its long passes over the top as the 2-0 score was carried into halftime.

10:40 into the second period, however, SVC got within one as the Mountaineers pushed to stay in it. Sophomore Jared Lacoste (Arlington, Vt.) chased a long ball towards the right corner and brought it deep into the box; he cut it backwards to elude a defender and open up a shooting lane before firing a take with his left foot back across the frame. His shot went into the left side of the cage as his first goal of the year made it a 2-1 contest.

Canton dug its heels in and would prevent Southern Vermont from having a take over nearly 20 minutes of ensuing action. Meanwhile, the Roos pushed it back to a two-goal game with a strike in the 75th minute, and the Canton offense cleaned up a scramble in the box off of a corner kick 6:23 later for the comfortable upper hand.

SVC junior goalie Joey Wolodkevich (Coxsackie, N.Y.) made his first collegiate start between the pipes and totaled five saves in the loss (0-1).
