BENNINGTON, Vt. – A lone goal in the 24th minute of action was all that was needed for the visiting Rivier University Raiders to top Southern Vermont College Thursday afternoon in non-conference men's soccer action at Everett Field.

RU scored off a rebound in the box with 21:59 on the clock and took that 1-0 upper hand into the halftime break. The Raiders then held off the Mountaineers' many pushes forward through the rest of the match to win the first meeting since the two sides were Great Northeast Athletic Conference rivals back in 2006.

Southern Vermont (2-14-3) concludes the 2018 campaign on Friday as the Mountaineers celebrate Senior Day in conjunction with a 3 p.m. New England Collegiate Conference tilt against Eastern Nazarene College. Rivier ends the season with an overall record of 1-15-3.

The keeper's best friends came up big on two occasions for RU with the first coming in the 10th minute of play. SVC sophomore Nick Langat (Silver Spring, Md.) lined up a shot from the top-right edge of the box and hit it across the frame with the outside of his foot; the ball came curling back but clanged off the left post to the relief of the Raiders.

Midway through the first half, Rivier put home all that was needed for the win. With the Mountaineer keeper out, a lofted header opportunity was turned away by an SVC defender; the rebound, however, was met first by sophomore Mike Federico (Milford, N.H.) who volleyed his first goal of the year over the Mountaineers and into the right side of the net.

Rivier only had one shot, which missed the frame, in the second half as Southern Vermont controlled possession through most of the period. The Mountaineers had eight takes in the final 45 minutes, but only one of those was on net and was snagged by RU freshman River Sutton (Kingman, Ariz.). A second chance came inches from being on goal when senior captain Nikolas Joseph (Coventry, Conn.) hit a free kick from 20 yards out off the crossbar with 13:37 to go in regulation.

Sutton finished with just the one save after replacing classmate Cody Richards (Pittsburg, N.H.) at halftime; Richards tallied three stops through the first half during his first collegiate win (1-0). SVC freshman netminder Tyler Mackie (Danville, N.H.) did not record a save in the loss (0-3-2) as the Mountaineer defense was solid in keeping the Raider offense at bay for most of the match.
