Men’s Cross Country Lands Two in Top 10 of Season-opening Mountaineer Invitational

BENNINGTON, Vt. – The Southern Vermont College men's cross country team began its 2018 season on Saturday by hosting the 2018 Mountaineer Invitational with a pair of the SVC runners placing in the top 10.

The Mountaineers finished sixth as a team with three of them making solid improvements from their 2017 performance on the grueling 5000-meter Mount Anthony course.

Southern Vermont is back at it on Saturday, September 8 at the Castleton Invitational—the Mountaineers' first 8k of the year starting at 11:45 a.m.

Bennington College sophomore C.G. Holden (Pittsburgh, Pa.) was the first to cross the line for SVC and fifth overall as he shaved 31 seconds off his time from last year's running on the course to finish at 18:55.

Junior Davanté Smith (Ellenville, N.Y.) was second for Southern Vermont and eighth overall at 19:12, and senior Isaiah Backels (Weare, N.H.) took 2:08 off his mark from the 2017 Mountaineer Invitational to be third for SVC with a 21:42. Senior Jackson Amankrah (New York City, N.Y.) was 2:54 faster than he was in last season's Mountaineer Invitational to be fourth for the team at 22:56.
