MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Saturday was very much a learning experience for the Southern Vermont College outdoor track & field team as many of the Mountaineers charted first-time collegiate participation at Wesleyan University's Spring Classic.
15 of the 16 SVC entries marked the first time those athletes competed in the respective event—including three from returning team members. Due to weather and facility conditions, the meet was held indoors.
Next up for the Mountaineers is the Saints Ice Breaker Open being held Saturday, March 31 at St. Lawrence University.
The best placement for Southern Vermont came from senior Marc Brandmeyer (Bennington, Vt.) who came in fourth in the men's 3000 meter race; he chalked up a 9:48.90 in his first time running the distance during a collegiate meet.
Freshman Emily Ikonen (Hubbardston, Mass.) landed at second on SVC's 400 meter dash record list with a 1:11.06 showing, and classmate Faith Sullivan (Bennington, Vt.) tossed a top mark of 7.97 meters in the shot put for the fourth-best showing in team history. Fellow freshman Dylan Knight (Sweeny, Texas) put himself at sixth on the program's record list for the men's 200 meter dash with a time of 26.26 seconds.
