WESTON, Mass. – The Southern Vermont College outdoor track & field team stepped up in a big way on Sunday at the New England Collegiate Conference/Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championships held at Regis College.
In what was the final meet of the season for all but one of the Mountaineers, SVC chalked up three school records and another 12 personal bests. The event, which was not officially sanctioned by the league, saw Southern Vermont place sixth overall and third out of the four NECC squads that charted team scores.
Senior Marc Brandmeyer (Bennington, Vt.) still has one meet on the schedule as he qualified the week prior for the Division III New England Championships. He will head to Mass. Institute of Technology on Saturday, May 5 to compete in the 3000 meter steeplechase.
Junior Isaiah Backels (Derry, N.H.) registered his first collegiate entry in the 400 meter dash at Regis and performed extremely well as he broke the Southern Vermont record with a mark of 55.72 seconds.
Backels was then the first leg of SVC's 4x400 meter relay team which broke its own record from earlier in the season with a 3:38.17. He was followed by sophomore Davanté Smith (Ellenville, N.Y.) and then freshman Dylan Knight (Sweeney, Texas) with Brandmeyer running the last lap for the Mountaineers.
Freshman Emily Ikonen (Hubbardston, Mass.) shaved .22 seconds off of her own school record in the 200 meter dash to chart a time of 29.63 seconds.
