FITCHBURG, Mass. – The Southern Vermont College women's basketball team couldn't bounce back from a slow start Saturday afternoon as the visiting Mountaineers fell 64-47 to Fitchburg State University in non-conference action at Parkinson Gymnasium.

The Falcons outscored SVC by 15 in the opening quarter before going into the break on top 35-15. The Mountaineers would score 21 of their points in the fourth stanza, but it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit.

Southern Vermont (3-6) concludes the 2018 portion of its schedule on Thursday when the Mountaineers host Northern Vermont University-Johnson for a 6 p.m. non-conference start.

SVC junior Di Smith (Troy, N.Y.) and freshman Katie Godon (Carmel, Calif.) both registered a season-best 10 points to lead the team; Smith added a team-high nine rebounds while Godon had three assists on the day.

Fitchburg State jumped out to a 16-0 lead and never looked back. 11 unanswered from the Falcons in the second quarter then pushed it to a 26-point difference. Smith notched seven points in the fourth while freshman Julia Ryan (Clifton Park, N.Y.) had all six of her points in the frame as she went 2-2 from downtown.
