CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The Southern Vermont College women's volleyball team fought to give Lesley University its first New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) loss of the year, but the hosting Lynx prevailed Sunday afternoon with a 3-0 victory at the Nicholas Athletics Center.
LU took the opening set by a 25-14 margin before edging out SVC 28-26 in the second. The Lynx then closed out the match with a 25-20 victory in the third and final frame to remain undefeated in league play.
Southern Vermont (2-14, 1-5 NECC) next hosts Newbury College on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. Conference start.
SVC was led by the eighth season double-double from freshman Alycia Stevens (Hudson Falls, N.Y.) as she notched a match-best 10 kills to go with 10 digs; she leads the team in double-doubles and has now recorded one in five of her last six contests. Junior Brin Goldman (Christiansted, Virgin Islands) tallied a team-high 13 digs while adding six kills to her line, and senior setter Sheilani Kaleopa (Riverside, Calif.) assisted on 14 of the 17 Mountaineer kills, chipping in with nine digs defensively. Freshman Hailee Walker (Cohoes, N.Y.) provided seven digs while classmate Amber Lesure (Cheshire, Mass.) popped up six digs in her first collegiate match.
Holding a slim 11-9 lead midway through the opening set, the Lynx went on a 10-3 run to take a nine-point upper hand before rolling to the 25-14 game win.
The second set would be a different story as the Mountaineers would lead the majority of the way and were one point away of evening the match at 1-1 as they held a 24-23 advantage. A Lynx kill would stave off SVC before the hosts used a 4-2 spurt to take the second frame 28-26.
The Lynx used the momentum built up from their late run in the second set to start the third as they opened up an 11-3 lead before earning the 3-0 match sweep with the 25-20 set win.
